The Brauroneion was a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Artemis Brauronia in the Akropolis Sanctuary in Athens, Greece.

Built during the reign of the tyrant Peisistratos, the sanctuary was located between the Propylea and the Chalkotheke, and consisted of a portico and a wooden statue of Artemis and a doe. The statue was later replaced with a marble one carved by the famous sculptor Praxiteles.[1]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Historically, the marble statue was erected by Praxiteles in the 4th century BCE. As such, the marble statue as shown in Odyssey is anachronistic.
