It is said that Chronicles games were developed by Climax Studios and not by Ubisoft (only published). I'd say it's the case of newer people being unfamiliar with the source material (the comics featuring Nikolai) and thus his name being written the wrong way. Is there even a name Nikolaï in real life that is written this way?
It's best to reach someone at Ubisoft who can set things straight about this. But IMO, whoever spelled his name this way in Chronicles was ignorant. As a Russian I have no idea where the ï symbol is coming from.
