He did have that negative response, yes. There was at first a sea of hate from a large portion of vocal people, mostly casual gamers who had played AC3 and either A) couldn't get over Ezio or B) didn't take the time to realise that much of Connor is hidden underneath the surface and therefore didn't care enough to properly understand his character. Plus the Homestead missions concealed much of his personality which many people didn't play. 

It took a little while after AC3's release for his fans to come together and really show their voice, and I actually think that there were a lot more people who loved him as a character straight away but just didn't show it, me included. Places like tumblr, here on the wiki and the subreddit praised him massively and over time more people began to realise how brilliant of a character he really is, and that sea of hate was mostly drowned out. But the damage was done, and ubisoft haven't given a character like him since.

Arguably his story is one the greatest written, but the way it was told was problematic and disjointed and his character suffered as a result.
