The way I see it is that the user controls the ancestor much like they would in a dream. The third person perspective is just to simulate proprioception for the player. For the user, it is much like being the ancestor as much as it about controlling them. Cutscenes are concrete data parts where the user loses any control and is just a passive spectator and can do nothing but watch as the events unfolded. During the memories and in instances between them, the user gains full control of the ancestor and it doesn't matter how he got from cutscene A to cutscene B as long as he got there while maintaining the required synchronization with their ancestor.
