Don't forget that there are spears in game and long maces so swords need to compete with all these long weapons. On another note, there is a unique spear in game Sarrisa which is funny since real Sarrisa was a 4-6 metres long pike while in game is simply spear, but I guess running around with 5m long pike would have been far funnier.
