That's not at all bizarre. I recall Steven Spielberg said that as a teenager he bought the Lawrence of Arabia soundtrack because that was the closest thing to video at the time. Movie music is the direct descendant of classical music.

Of course, soundtrack =/= background compositions. Movies and games introduce us to pop songs all the time eg. Be My Baby in Mean Streets, Afternoon Delight in Anchorman, Come and Get Your Love in Guardians of the Galaxy.
