In real life, the Hashshashin were ruthless assassins and feared by the Crusaders. 

The Templars were knights who pleged a life to guarding pilgrims to the Holy Land and fighting in the Cruasades. The Templars were wrognfully accused of their idol worship by King Philip the Fair who took advantage of

1. The way the Templars became the top bankers of Europe and Middle East

2. The way they operated in a highly religious demeanor, especially their last Grandmaster

3. France's economy was near downfall because their king was heavily in debt to the Templars. 

Using this to his advantage, he bribed people to spred ill rumors of the Templar Knights and because the Pope was related to King Philip, he did not allow the Vatican to come and help the Templars. The Templars were brutally tortured and their families threatened into persuading the Templars into giving false accusations to the public before being killed off. 

Their wealth was passed over to King Philip and Pope Clement lived with the guilt over such actions his whole life, until when he wrote a docuemt stating how the Templars were falsely accused. But this document did not resurface until like the early 2000s.
