Both good points, I do agree that the modern day story is an essential part of the series because its the only thing that connects this whole meta-narrative together, and its needs to get better. Desmond tied it together really well because each historical story was accessed through an ancestor in his family tree, but now that he's gone the reasons for exploring the past keep changing (research for an Abstergo entertainment product, finding Sages, etc) and I feel like we need a new overarching objective for the modern day protagonist to be striving for, like Desmond's goal of preventing the catastrophe from reoccuring and destroying the Earth.
