I think they just like to introduce a character in a new game an see if they are well received and then see if they are eligible for a sequel. I'm sure if Connor was well received and if his game was better then they would've continued on his story. Edward was very well received and his game was good but the continuation was not necessary because of Forsaken. Shay was received fairly well but we didn't spend enough time with him and his game was overshadowed by Unity which had the rubbish character of Arno.

So if there is another new protagonist which is just as beloved as Ezio then you can be sure that we would see more from them after their first game.
