I apologize for reviving a forum that's three years old, but I'd like to weigh in with an opinion of my own.

It is my belief that La Volpe was a Sage. I've got some evidence to support this, although it may seem like mere semantics or conjecture with little to back it up, but in the Animus databases, which were written by Shaun, explains that La Volpe's historical records bordered on the mythical more so than the real and that accounts have reported on him performing the fantastical such as showcasing seemingly omnipresent abilities for being witnessed in three different locations simultaneously. Other accounts have him being able to steal from the Pope's carriage without being caught by the Pope himself, and he was also allegedly immortal. He also had purple colored irises and was said to be able to see through walls.

The Sage that we saw in Black Flag, Bartholomew Roberts, had strange colored irises himself, and we know that a Sage is immortal due to reincarnation. As for being able to see through walls, it's possible that Isu reincarnated humans (which is what Sages are) also possess Eagle Vision. I'm not quite sure about the omnipresent feat though.

Thoughts?
