Benjamin Rush

Benjamin Rush (1745 – 1813) was an American civic leader from Philadelphia who was one of the signatories of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Benjamin was a close friend of the physician Philip Syng Physick, who performed the first human blood transfusion in the history of medicine. Unwilling to publish his papers for fear the scientific community was not ready for such findings, Philip entrusted his research to Benjamin, who secretly preserved it in the archives of the Library Company of Philadelphia.
