Auld Shillelagh
The Auld Shillelagh was a tavern located in Alveston, England, outside of Bristol and on the road to Hatherton. It was owned by a man called Jack and was frequented by Edward Kenway during his trips to the town in his youth.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
During one of his visits to the tavern in 1711, Edward noticed three of his rivals—Tom Cobleigh, his son Seth, and a man named Julian—encouraging a young woman to drink to intoxication, with less than honorable intentions. Confronting the three men as they took the girl outside, Edward briefly fought them before Caroline Scott arrived and intervened on his behalf, sending the attackers running. After introducing herself, Caroline took the woman—revealed to be her family's servant, Rose—and rode off again, leaving a smitten Edward outside the tavern.[1]
Years later, Edward's mother, Linette Kenway, found herself employed at the Auld Shillelagh, desperately needing money after her farm was burned down in 1712 by Templars on the orders of Emmett Scott, Caroline's father. Following his return from the West Indies in 1723, Edward visited his exhausted mother at the tavern, hoping to reconcile with her. Although Edward offered to take care of her with his newly-gained fortune, Linette disowned her son after learning of his intentions to take revenge on the men responsible for burning the farm, and threatened to call the guards on him, forcing Edward to leave.[1]
