The Altar of Athena

The Altar of Athena, also known as the Great Altar of Athena Polias, was a stepped altar on the western side of the Akropolis Sanctuary in Athens, Greece.

Located between the Erechtheion and the Parthenon, the altar was built by the sons of Peisistratos in around 525 BCE. When Perikles begun the construction of the Parthenon, he also remodeled the altar, making it large enough to host even the hecatomb of the Panathenaia festival.[1]
