Al-Qata'i was the capital of Egypt during the Tlunid period of Egypt.

Originally a military camp, Al-Qata'i grew into a proper city through the will of Ahmad ibn Tulun and help from his suppliers.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Officially founded in 868, Ahmad ibn Tulun wished his capital to rival Alexandria as a center of knowledge and surpass Samarra as a seat of power.[2] To ensure his plans came to fruition, Ibn Tulun established numerous trade routes, including one with the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Dublin in Ireland.[3]

In 905, Egypt was reoccupied by the Abbasids and Al-Qata'i was plundered and razed, leaving only its mosque standing. It later was incorporated into the city of Cairo, founded in 969.[4]
