Abd al-Rahman I (731 – 788) was a member of the Umayyad dynasty in Damascus and later the founder and first emir of the Emirate of Córdoba, reigning from 756 until his death in 788.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 750, the Umayyad Caliphate was overthrown by a rebellion led by the Abbasids. The survivors of the revolution, including Abd al-Rahman I, were driven west and established themselves in Córdoba, founding an emirate.[1][2]
