European Pond Turtle

Turtles are an order of reptiles known as Testudines which are characterized by the protective shell developed from their ribs that enclose their body.[1] A well known species of sea turtle is the green sea turtle, which was often hunted for its shell.

History[edit | edit source]

In West Francia, jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan once hunted three regular European pond turtles to offer at the altar Sarclitas.[2]

Cultural depictions[edit | edit source]

During the Sengoku period, legends of long lived turtles, known as minogame (蓑亀), became symbols of longevity and felicity.[3] In 1582, Lady Nene gifted a trinket with an image of a minogame to the samurai Yasuke after he and Fujibayashi Naoe had eliminated a group of corrupt daikan.[4]

During the Seven Years' War, Shay Cormac found a cave painting of a great turtle as part of the story of the Sky Woman. The painting depicted the great turtle that carried a part of Earth on its back. As time passed on, the turtle and the earth on its back grew to be an island, which would be called North America.[5]
