The General on the Great Wall
The General on the Great Wall was a virtual representation of one of Wei Yu's disciple's genetic memories relived through the Animus.
Description[edit | edit source]
Wei Yu's disciple headed to the construction site on the Great Wall of China in search of Meng Tian to investigate his role in the the attack on their village.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
The youxia approached the camp's main gate.
- Wei Yu's disciple: All right, now that I'm in, I should learn what I can about the general.
They closed in on a Qin soldier guarding the entrance.
- Qin soldier: Halt! Who are you?
- Wei Yu's disciple: A new laborer, sir.
- Qin soldier: All right, in you go.
Inside the construction site, they took a position next to a worker, pretending to help with a rampart as they eavesdropped on a conversation between two nearby soldiers.
- Upright soldier 1: This general of ours... he works himself to the bone.
- Upright soldier 2: It's because he would never ask a soldier to do something he himself wouldn't.
- Upright soldier 1: But he works harder than any of the other generals! At this rate, he'll—
- Upright soldier 2: Don't even say it! A man such as he deserves to live a long and prosperous life, so don't curse him like that.
- Wei Yu's disciple: Huh... Not the reputation I was expecting from our empire's fiercest general. He sounds down to earth.
The youxia then entered a tent.
- Wei Yu's disciple: I'm sure there's something noteworthy about the general in the officer's documents here.
They found a scroll on top of a table and read it.
Report back to Meng Tian
- Our subordinates' investigation has concluded that Yang Duanhe was responsible fot the ambush at Jade Spring.
- Wei Yu's disciple: These are reports for the general, about an investigation into... my village? Did the general not know the attack? It seems that the purple Qin soldiers are acting without Meng Tian's knowledge... Does that really mean the general had no idea about the attack?
They left the tent and went to talk to the foreman supervising a couple of workers piling hay in a stack.
- Wei Yu's disciple: Excuse me, sir. Do you know where the general is? I wanted to thank him for something.
- Foreman: I don't give away information for free. Those bricks over there need to go up to that tower. Perhaps when the bricks are where they need to be, I'll feel more generous with my information.
The disciple lifted a stone brick and carried it to the top of the nearby tower, passing by some workers talking amongst each other.
- Worker 1: I'm so glad it's the general that's in charge of building the wall.
- Worker 2: Agreed. There's no one else I would trust more to keep the Xiongnu out of our borders.
- Worker 1: And where any other commander might treat us like lowly laborers, he treats us with respect and dignity.
- Worker 2: He truly is a man of the people.
After reaching the top, the youxia set the brick down near the foreman.
- Wei Yu's disciple: The bricks have been moved.
- Foreman: Hmph. The general is in his office over there. I saw him talking to a Qin soldier in purple.
- Wei Yu's disciple: Purple uniform? Interesting... Well, thank you for the directions.
The disciple thought to themselves while they took a zipline down the tower.
- Wei Yu's disciple: Why would the general be speaking to a soldier in purple? Was Nie Jing right about his involvement?
They went to Meng Tian's office.
- Wei Yu's disciple: It's time to judge the general with my own two eyes, and if I'm lucky, I may even catch a glimpse of the purple soldier.
They then approached the window of the house where they saw the general speaking to a soldier garbed in purple and eavesdropped on their conversation.
- Meng Tian: I ordered the leader of your contingent to come. Why have you come in his stead?
- Purple soldier: He was unavailable.
- Meng Tian: It wasn't a request.
- Purple soldier: You believe you command us? If you haven't realized, we don't wear your colors. We serve only Yang Duanhe!
Meng Tian left the room, prompting the disciple to move away from the window.
Interrupting their conversation is a horn that blares in the distance. You look and find its source—a horde of Xiongnu invaders closing in on the Wall. Meng Tian rallies his men, while the soldier in purple makes an escape. Though desperate to pursue him, you cannot leave the Xiongnu to breach the Great Wall, and decide to help repel them.
The youxia leapt into the fray to assist in the fight against the invading Xiongnu in through an unfinished section of the wall.
- Wei Yu's disciple: These Xiongnu... only death and destruction lie in their wake.
- Meng Tian: Men! To me! Attack!
Keep your spirits up! Push them back!
Another group of raiders closed in on the camp. The disciple followed him to the fight.
- Meng Tian: Men! Ride with me! We shall not fall today!
- Qin soldier: For the Qin empire!
- Wei Yu's disciple: Defend the wall! Don't falter!
Eventually, they noticed movement up on one of the Great Wall's towers.
- Wei Yu's disciple: That doesn't sound good. Something is happening up on the great wall platform!
As more Xiongnu approached the wall, the youxia used a lift to reach the platform and climbed to reach the ramparts of the wall, spotting the Xiongnu commander and another warrior fighting a pair of Qin soldiers.
- Wei Yu's disciple: That's their commander. If I take him out, the Xiongnu should retreat.
They engaged in combat with the men.
- Xiongnu commander: For Touman Chanyu, death to the Qin!
- Wei Yu's disciple: On my honor as a youxia, I shall defend my people.
- Xiongnu commander: What can a small gelding like you do against the might of the Xiongnu?
You are a fool for coming here by yourself! - Wei Yu's disciple: I, alone, am enough to stop the likes of you.
- Xiongnu commander: Your fragile frame will crumble before my might!
- Wei Yu's disciple: Your arrogance will be your downfall.
After an intense fight, the disciple managed to end the commander. Meng Tian then approached to congratulate them.
- Meng Tian: I might not recognize your face, but I can spot talent on the battlefield from a mile away. Would you find some time to come to my residence in Yangzhou? I'm always looking for promising military talent, and I'd like to hear more about where you learned to do.. all that.
- Wei Yu's disciple: It—it would be an honor.
- Meng Tian: Excellent. I'll tell my steward to expect you, then.
As the general left, Yu Ying approached the other youxia.
- Yu Ying: Looks like I missed all the action.
- Wei Yu's disciple: Yingying! Perfect timing.
- Yu Ying: I'll say. That's not a battle I would have enjoyed being a part of. So what did you find out?
- Wei Yu's disciple: It seems like the general wasn't involved in the destruction of the village. In fact, he's invited me to his residence to reward me for repelling the Xiongnu.
- Yu Ying: I don't like you walking into the residence of the Grand General, but it would be an opportunity to learn more. I'll follow up on my leads and meet you outside his mansion when I'm done. Be careful when you're in there, all right?
- Wei Yu's disciple: I will, I promise.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
While investigating Meng Tian, Wei Yu's disciple happened to help repel a Xiongnu raid attack. The grand general recognized their merit in battle and invited them to meet him at his residence to be rewarded.
