Richard Altman (died 1888) was an English actor who worked at the Adelphi Theatre in London, United Kingdom. In the autumn of 1888, his understudy Woody Shinnings stabbed him to death and avoided capture while the Metropolitan Police Service and Scotland Yard were preoccupied with Jack the Ripper's murders in Whitechapel. However, the British Assassin Evie Frye later apprehended Shinnings and delivered him to Inspector Frederick Abberline.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Richard Altman is a minor character who is mentioned in the 2015 downloadable expansion Jack the Ripper for the video game Assassin's Creed: Syndicate. His murder is based on a real-life incident in which the actor William Terriss was stabbed outside the Adelphi Theatre by his co-worker Richard Archer Prince in December 1897.
