Milo van der Graaff, self-proclaimed "Honest Businessman and Friend", was a Dutch naval trader of dubious legality who operated in the West Indies in the early 18th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Having built a powerful trading fleet in the West Indies, Milo operated as a merchant, smuggler, and pirate during the final decades of the Golden Age of Piracy. Around 1717, he established contact with the pirate captain Edward Kenway, by way of his representatives sent to the naval forts liberated by the latter. Over the following years, Milo employed Edward's services numerous times to sink or capture British[1] and Spanish warships,[2] as well as pirate hunters,[3] eliminate particular individuals,[4] and aid his own trading fleet.[5]
Eventually, both the Spanish and the British declared Milo a wanted man, forcing him to leave the West Indies for good. Edward assisted him one final time, escorting him to safety after fighting through four enemy fleets. For all of his efforts, Milo rewarded Edward with a set of powerful Golden Flintlock Pistols, which the pirate kept as his personal firearms.[6]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Milo van der Graaff is a character introduced in the 2013 video game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Despite being the one assigning all naval contracts in the game, he never makes a physical appearance, only communicating with Edward through letters and his representatives. This changed in the 2026 remake, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, where Milo personally visits Edward at his Great Inagua hideout to introduce himself and propose a direct collaboration.
When talking to Edward, Milo speaks with a noticeable German accent, despite his supposed Dutch origins.
Milo's surname is similar to that of the 19th-century Flemish merchant and Black Cross Jan van der Graff, but their exact relation – if any exists – is unknown.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
Milo is related to the name Miles, which is the Latin word for "soldier"; however, it has also been suggested to be a derivation of the Slavic mil, meaning "grace, gracious." His surname is composed of the Dutch words van, der, and Graaf, meaning "from, of", "the", and "count".
