Luis de Almeida (1525 – 1583) was a Portuguese merchant, surgeon, and Jesuit missionary active in Japan.[1] Almeida first traveled to Japan in 1552, in connection to the silk trade with China. After three years in the country, he decided to become a Jesuit and donated all his wealth to the church. Almeida was instrumental in establishing a hospital and an orphanage in Funai,[2] and is credited with introducing European medicine to Japan.[1]
