Queen Æthelthryth of Northumbria (c. 636 – 679), also known as Etheldreda, Audrey, or Edeldreda, was the founder of the Isle of Ely Monastery and its first Abbess.[1] She was married to King Ecgfrith.[2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

After her death in 679, she was buried in a simple wooden coffin. Years later, the coffin was opened so her remains could be moved to a new marble sarcophagus and, according to the legend, Æthelthryth's body showed not a single sign of decay. The preservation of her body was seen as a miracle, and Æthelthryth was declared a saint.[1]
