Deva Victrix
Deva Victrix was a large Anglo-Saxon occupied fortress along the River Dee in England, west of Goodwinlec.
Built above a waterfall, it was the main encampment of the area and heavily fortified. It spanned both sides of the river, being connected by a narrow bridge.[1]

Deva Victric was built in the 70s AD by the Romans, and was rebuilt several times over the following centuries, up until its abandonment in the late 4th to early 5th century. The name Deva Victrix derives from "goddess" (Brythonic dēvā, Latin dea or diva) after the goddess of the River Dee, and the title of the Legio XX Valeria Victrix who were based there.[2]
By the 9th century, Deva Victrix was occupied by Anglo-Saxons. After the area was scouted by Vikings sent by Vagn, the fortress was raided multiple times by shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, who claimed Saint George's Holy Sword from the champion residing there.[3]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The civilian settlement that grew around Deva Victrix during the Roman occupation, remained after the latter departed Britain, eventually becoming the present-day city of Chester (from Latin castrum, "fort").[2] The Roman city walls, later improved and extended by the Angles, then the Normans, are some of the best-preserved in the country.[4]
