Rikiwulf
Rikiwulf (died 872) was a Viking from the Wolf Clan, serving under Kjotve the Cruel during the 9th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 872, Rikiwulf was present during the capture of Eivor Varinsdottir and her crew. Rikiwulf was given instructions by Kjotve to send Eivor on a slave-ship to Ireland while her crewmates were to be sacrificed in a blood ritual at Avaldsnes. At Heillboer, where Kjotve prepared to send Eivor off to Ireland, Rikiwulf was given ownership of the axe Eivor held, which had originally belonged to her father Varin.[1]
Rikiwulf later returned to Avaldsnes after Eivor was seemingly sent off to slavery. Unbeknownst to him however, Eivor managed to free herself and escape from her captors. In the midst of interrogating Bragi, Rikiwulf was confronted by Eivor, who challenged him to a duel. Despite his superior strength, Rikiwulf ultimately fell to the shieldmaiden, who then found and recovered her father's axe nearby.[1]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Rikiwulf shares his name with another Viking who is known for having invaded and settled near what is today Tielt in West Flanders.
