Diktys
Diktys was a fisherman and the foster father of the hero Perseus in Greek mythology.
Biography[edit | edit source]
When the King Akrisios of Argos learned of a prophecy that he would be slain by his grandson, he attempted to prevent this. First, he locked his only child, his daughter Danae in a room of bronze. When the god Zeus impregnated her by visiting her in the form of golden rain, the king had both Danae and her baby shut in a crate and cast into the sea.[1]
Instead of dying, Danae and Perseus were saved by Diktys. He took them under his wing, raising Perseus on the island of Seriphos. He taught Perseus to fish, hunt, and ride.[1]
The ruler of the island and Diktys' brother, Polydektes wanted to marry Danae. Perseus opposed this, and thus Polydektes sent Perseus to slay the gorgon Medusa.[1]
