The Priestesses' Cave was a small natural cave in the mountains between Elis and Arkadia, located near the shore in the Forest of Soron.

History[edit | edit source]

During the Peloponnesian War, the cave was turned into their own 'secret den' by Hexione, Thelxiope, and Xenokleia, when they assumed the role of priestesses of the Eagle Bearer, the Spartan misthios Kassandra. At some point, a large white bear was trapped in the depths of the cave, and the women considered the beast to be sacred, giving it offerings.[1]

Some time later, the Spartan misthios Kassandra learned of the cult dedicated to herself, and she visited the cave in search of the cure for the girl Myrto. Instead of the cure, she came face to face with the bear, and slew it, though the priestesses had hoped she would be slain by the bear instead.[1]
