Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (1165-1257), a distant ancestor of Desmond Miles, brought crucial reforms to the Assassin Brotherhood and expanded its influence beyond its Middle Eastern origins.
Altaïr was skilled but arrogant, the youngest man ever to gain the rank of Master. On a mission to retrieve the artifact called the Apple of Eden, he broke the three tenets of the Assassin's Creed, costing him his status. His task for redemption was to stop the Templars, who were playing the Crusaders and Saracens against one another for control of the Holy Land. Altaïr eventually earned the respect of King Richard, hastening the end of the Third Crusade.
The wisdom Altaïr gained let him uncover that his Mentor, Al Mualim, was a traitor using the Apple's unfathomable powers for his own selfish desires. After restoring order, he became the Mentor, started a family, and reformed Assassin practices.
Altaïr dedicated the rest of his life to creating a Codex containing his memories, together with the information extracted from the Apple, in the hopes that future generations would use it to establish Assassin guilds throughout the world.
Ezio Auditore da Firenze
Ezio Auditore da Firenze (1476-1524) had a passion that drove him fromb being a carefree youth to an accomplished Assassin leader.
Ezio's privileged life vanished when Templar conspirators hanged his father and brothers. Taking up arms left to him by his father, he became an outlaw and traveled to Monteriggioni, where his Uncle Mario revealed his Assassin lineage. Ezio took up their cause, at first to protect his surviving family, but eventually to free Italy from Templar corruption in the form of the Borgias and their allies.
Defeating the Borgias took many years, during which he befriended such luminaries as Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolò Machiavelli. They saw his potential and encouraged him to find his own path, and when he became the Brotherhood's Mentor he taught others the same.
Later, Ezio traveled to the Middle East in search of Altaïr's lost library and the origins of the Assassins. He learned that his purpose was to be a conduit between an ancient civilization and a man in the future named Desmond. His duty done, Ezio retired from the Brotherhood, married his love, and raised a family before dying content.
Connor
Ratonhnhaké:ton (1756-unknown), also called Connor, was an Assassin who struggled with the ideals of liberty and justice, fighting for a cause that ultimately did not embrace him.
Connor was the son of a Kanien'kehá:ka mother, Kaniehtí:io, and an English Templar father, Haytham Kenway. Their village burned during the Seven Years' War, killing his mother when he was still a child.
Connor's deep-rooted anger was channelled when a Piece of Eden granted him a vision. He was told to seek out the sign of the Assassins, which featured on the home of Achilles, a former Mentor. Achilles reluctantly trained the young man before sending him out to face the Templars, who planned to control North America and exploit ancient technology there.
As an Assassin, Connor aided the Patriots and specifically George Washington, the figurehead of the growing American Revolution. He admired their desire for liberty and their opposition to Templar aims, but learned they were destroying his people. Despite his misgivings, he lent his support to such acts as the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of the Chesapeake. He assassinated Templar leaders, including his father. In the end, Connor knew he had made the Revolution a success, but that his people would not enjoy its benefits.
Nikolai Orelov
Nikolai Orelov was a working-class Assassin caught up in causes beyond his control that ultimately cost him his family and life.
Trained by his father, Nikolai reluctantly undertook a mission to kill Tsar Alexander III, who was in possession of a powerful artifact called the Staff of Eden. Later, the Assassins learned that Templars were experimenting on the Staff and sent Nikolai and a team to destroy it. Their ally Nikola Tesla switched on an electrical weapon early, triggering the Tunguska Event and killing everyone present but Nikolai.
During the Russian Revolution, Nikolai became obsessed with the Staff, finally finding a fragment in Rasputin's grave. Considering his duty done, he fled with his wife and daughter to America. But they were deported during the Red Scare, leaving Nikolai to raise their newborn son Innokenti.
Nikolai and his son lived alone in the woods until the Brotherhood tracked them down, demanding that he return. He refused and killed the Assassins with his son's help, eventually sacrificing himself to let Innokenti escape. Daniel Cross, a Templar sleeper agent, was Nikolai's descendant.

Battle of the Hydaspes: Punjab, -326-06
Following his triumph over the Achaemenian Empire, Alexander the Great set out to continue his conquest of Asia. His next objective: the Punjab territory. He confronted an Indian prince named Porus in the area between the Hydaspes (Jhelum) and Acesines (Chenab) rivers.
Despite the numerical superiority of Porus’s forces, along with the intimidating presence of 200 elephants, Alexander the Great’s troops outflanked Porus’s left side. The maneuver provoked a feeling of panic among the elephants. In the end, the extremely mobile cavalry of Alexander proved to be too powerful for the Indian prince’s forces.
In the aftermath of the battle, Alexander the Great, probably impressed by Porus’s military flair and spirit, allowed him to retain his kingdom. The prince became an ally and a subordinate ruler to the Macedonian king until he was assassinated, sometime between 321 and 315 BC, by Eudemus, who was one of Alexander the Great’s generals prior to Alexander’s death.

During his reign as the King of Macedonia, the Templar-supported Alexander the Great had raised one of the largest empires in the ancient world and created a new Hellenistic civilization, by leaving Greek colonists behind in conquered lands.
As he continued to seize lands across Asia, it emerged that the successes he enjoyed could not be attributed to his military prowess alone. The Assassin Brotherhood discovered that the true force behind his empire was a powerful Piece of Eden known as the Staff.
Messiah: Jerusalem, Israel, 33
Jesus of Nazareth drew the attention of the Templar Order by accumulating many devout followers who were drawn by his miraculous displays. The Templars discovered that the source behind his grand miracles was an ancient and powerful artifact known as the Shroud of Eden, and devised a plan to take it from him.
Betrayed by one of his disciples, he was arrested, tortured, and later crucified at the hands of the Templars, who took the Shroud. Just days after his death, the disciples loyal to Jesus managed to reacquire the Shroud and attempted to harness its powers to resurrect their Messiah.

As Genghis Khan, the revered warrior and founder of Mongolia, continued to grow his tyrannical empire in the east, he caught the attention of the Assassin Brotherhood, specifically that of its Mentor Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.
Altaïr suspected the involvement of a Piece of Eden and was unable to restrain himself from investigating. He left the mountain fortress of Masyaf, accompanied by his wife Maria and son Darim, and headed for Mongolia in 1217. After a ten year journey, they partnered with the Mongolian Assassin Qulan Gal and devised a plan to finally eliminate Khan.
After Altaïr failed to infiltrate Khan’s camp unnoticed, he was rescued by Qulan, forcing a change in tactics. As the aging Mentor took a back seat, his son Darim drove Khan out of the camp. As the conqueror attempted to flee on horseback, Qulan, an accomplished archer, shot his mount. As he lay injured, Darim used his crossbow to end Khan's life.
Dante's Pupil: Venice, Italy, 1321-06-17
Domenico, founder of the Auditore family, joined the Assassin Brotherhood under the tuition of Dante Alighieri in Venice.

Dante Alighieri was murdered in Ravenna while gathering supplies for his voyage to Spain on September 14, 1321.

Domenico Auditore purchased and renovated what would become the family villa in Monteriggioni.
Touched by the Shroud: Agnadello, Italy, 1498-03-06
Giovanni Borgia, a sickly infant, was subjected to the powers of a mysterious Piece of Eden known as the Shroud. His physical afflictions were healed, but the use of the First Civilization artifact on the child came not without consequence.
The Man Behind the Name: Rio de Janeiro Bay, 1502-01
Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence, Italy. He worked for the Medici family, where he made a number of connections with merchants and began to be interested in the voyages of Christopher Columbus. His cousin Cristina Vespucci convinced Lorenzo de Medici to make Amerigo an explorer.
On his third voyage across the Atlantic, which departed on May 14, 1501, he reached Rio de Janeiro Bay and Rio de la Plata. He returned to Lisbon, Portugal, in 1504.
Amerigo Vespucci is known for having mapped what is known today as South America. Moreover, he was the first to highlight that the newly discovered territories were separate from Asia.
In 1507, Martin Waldseemuller, a German cartographer and clergymen, proposed that part of the Brazilian territory discovered by Amerigo Vespucci be labelled America, in honor of him.
A Future Brother: Rome, Italy, 1503-11-14
Wishing to escape a life of fear, Giovanni responded to a letter delivered by courier pigeon by locating its sender in the city. Using the rare gift of Eagles Vision, he identified a hooded figure in the streets, before the man took flight. Giovanni rushed after him, and after a brief pursuit the man revealed himself to be Francesco Vecellio, an Assassin.
Francesco, the former apprentice of Perotto Calderon - Giovanni's probable father - offered to take the boy under his wing and train him in the ways of the Brotherhood.
Misinformed: Rome, Italy, 1506-06-22
The Hermeticist leader Ercole Massimo realized that the Renaissance visionary Leonardo da Vinci had discovered the entrance to a mysterious Temple honoring the ancient Greek scholar Pythagoras beneath Rome. He had his disciples take Leonardo to the depths of the city's catacombs, then beat and torture the inventor to get the answers he sought. Despite the ill treatment, Leonardo refused to share his knowledge with the extremist, aware that any potential discoveries would be misused.
After investigating the disappearance of his friend, the Mentor of the Assassin Brotherhood, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, entered the catacombs and confronted the Hermeticists before cutting down the cultists and assassinating a pleading Ercole.
With Leonardo safe and the threat ended, the duo entered the temple and obtained the cryptic message within.
Saving the Magnificent: Constantinople, Turkey, 1511-08-04
Prince Suleiman I returned to Constantinople after a religious pilgrimage and attended a cultural exposition at Topkapı Palace. Unbeknownst to him, the Byzantine Templars had concocted a plan to kill Suleiman at his own party.
Fortunately, Ezio Auditore da Firenze and the Turkish Assassins led by Yusuf Tazim unearthed their scheme and infiltrated the exposition dressed as minstrels. Their disguises proved to be a great distraction and allowed Suleiman’s Templar attackers to be identified and disposed of.
When Ezio and the other Assassins were discovered by the Prince’s guard, a battle ensued. It ended when Ezio assassinated Suleiman’s last attacker, which proved his faction’s innocence and began a beneficial friendship between himself and the Prince.
Bone Collector: Tenochtitlan, Aztec Empire, 1520-06-25
Following his journey to the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, Giovanni Borgia used his abilities to locate a Piece of Eden known as a Crystal Skull. During a violent uproar, he killed the Skull's possessor, a priest, and stole the artifact from the Aztec.
In the weeks that followed, Giovanni escaped the city and headed back to Europe.
Not Crystal, But Gold: Basel, Switzerland, 1520-11-27
Upon returning from his mission in the Americas, Giovanni Borgia took the Crystal Skull to the scholar Bombastus von Hohenheim (commonly known as Paracelsus).
After numerous unsuccessful tests, Bombastus dismissed the artifact's potential power. He instead took interest in Giovanni's uncanny ability to discern a formula taken from his incomplete "Book", which allowed him to turn silver into gold.
Man of Controversy: Oxford, England, 1583
Having gained widespread fame and notoriety for his outstanding memory retention and grasp of the mnemonic system, Giodano Bruno quickly gained the favor of some of Europe's most influential individuals, including Pope Pius V and King Henry III of France.
Bruno was an Italian Dominican friar, astronomer, mathematician, and Hermeticist. His thirst for cosmological knowledge saw him surpass the models of Nicolaus Copernicus. He proposed that the Sun was but one star in a sky of infinite stars, which were orbited by an infinite number of planets inhabited by intelligent extraterrestrial life.
In 1593, Bruno travelled to England at the recommendation of Henry III. There, he met with members of the Hermetic inner circle who surrounded John Dee. Whether or not he met with Dee himself and what he accomplished at these meetings remains a mystery to this day. Bruno lectured at Oxford University for a time, but his controversial theories did not sit well with other educators and he was denied a permanent position.
His flair for displeasing powerful people proved to be his demise, as he was later arrested during the Roman Inquisition, branded a heretic, and burned at the stake.
Bookworm: Prague, Czech Republic, 1589
After years of living and working with fellow occultist Edward Kelley and his family in Prague, the influential astronomer, mathematician, and Hermeticist John Dee parted company with his colleague following a quarrelsome period of disagreements and high tensions.
Dee, who at the time was in possession of an Apple of Eden, and Kelley had been absorbed in the study of a mysterious tome with the power to overpower the human mind with revelations. The pair came to a head when Kelley became obsessed with the book. It consumed his fragile mind and sent him down the path of mental instability.
Realizing the dangers, Dee pleaded with Kelley to abandon his studies, but the latter refused. Soon after, following a spate of blistering arguments, Dee departed their shared home in Prague, taking the book with him.
Death of the Dog: Braddock, USA, 1755-07-09
Having enlisted in the Virginian militia during the "French and Indian War", George Washington came under the command of British Army General and Templar, Edward Braddock. Acting as his guide, he rode with Braddock during the Battle of the Monongehala, as British forces moved to conquer Fort Duquesne.
During the campaign, Braddock and a group of his men, were ambushed by Templar Haytham Kenway and a group of natives from local tribes assembled by Kaniehtí:io of the Kanien'kehá:ka. In a desperate attempt to prevent his general's assassination, Washington shot Haytham's steed, trapping him beneath the horse. But before he could fire another shot, he was pinned down by Kaniehtí:io, who held her blade to his throat, while Haytham Kenway wriggled free and fatally wounded Braddock.
With Braddock's death and the expedition a failure, Washington rallied a retreat of the obliterated forces and recovered the body to prevent its desecration.
Conspiring with the British, Bengal, India, 1757
Mir Jafar sought to overthrow his brother-in-law as the head of the government of Bengal and began a secret alliance with the British Empire. In the Battle of Palashi, fought on June 23, 1757, he swore by the Holy Quran to fight the British but instead informed Robert Clive of the Bengal ruler’s tactics, urging the British to advance to seize the territory. Following their victory, the British installed him as the new ruler.
Mir Jafar offered the British financial compensations to the East India Company, and promised that he would exclude France from the region. He also promised special favors to the British military and naval forces in Calcutta. Ultimately, the endless monetary concessions forced upon him by the British resulted in his financial and political ruin. In October 1760, The East India Company forced him to resign in favor of his son-in-law Mir Qasim.

Smoke Leads To...: Mount Vernon, USA, 1760-11-02
After attaining the rank of Colonel in the British forces, George Washington focused his efforts on eradicating the native threat during the "French and Indian War". From his estate in Mount Vernon, Washington ordered the destruction of Kanatahséton, a Kanien'keháka village in the Mohawk Valley, as he was concerned that local tribes would attack his men and hinder their mission.
The village was burned to the ground, claiming many lives in the process, including that of Kaniehtí:io - the spirited mother of Ratonhaké:ton, who was only four years old at the time.
Uncle Sam: Boston, British America, 1770-03-05
While on an errand to Boston with Achilles Davenport, a teenage Connor witnessed a commotion near the Old State House. Achilles urged him to look closer, and he saw that the clash between the Regulars and citizens had been sparked by a small group of Templars, including Charles Lee and the boy’s father, Haytham Kenway.
Connor followed one of Haytham’s Templar snipers to the rooftops and managed to assassinate him before he could fire into the crowd. Unfortunately, Charles Lee was in a vantage point across the street, and pulled the trigger, causing panic among the soldiers and citizens, resulting in the death of numerous innocents, in an event which came to be known as the Boston Massacre. Connor was accused of firing the first shot, making him notorious in the city.
In an effort to clear his name, Achilles directed him towards a Revolutionary named Samuel Adams. Adams showed Connor how to reduce notoriety by exploiting means of propaganda and tearing wanted posters from the streets. He also introduced the boy to the Freemason’s tunnels beneath Boston, which allowed for faster travel in the city.
This was the first of many interactions between the pair. Together, they weakened and eliminated high-ranking Templars and strengthened the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War.
Washington's Savior: New York, USA, 1776-06-28
Traveling to New York, George Washington attended the execution of Connor, the man falsely accused of plotting to murder him. As he peered at the gallows, Washington witnessed the Assassin's daring escape.
Lost among the chaos, Washington was attacked by Thomas Hickey, a Templar and traitor, who attempted to seize the opportunity to kill the Continental Army Commander. Luckily, Connor reached Hickey and assassinated him before he could complete his mission. With the Assassin's innocence proven, Washington fled the city and headed for Philadelphia.
Traitor of the Revolution
Benedict Arnold was a general serving in the patriot army who had earned a number of victories against the British during the Revolutionary War. In 1776, he forced the surrender of British general John Burgoyne at Saratoga. Despite his military successes, Arnold never received much recognition from the Continental Congress, and was often passed over for promotions. Moreover, Congress refused to pay the expenses of some of his campaigns. He was even accused of corruption, although he was proven innocent.
However, it seems that Benedict Arnold never forgave the Continental Congress for his poor treatment. In 1779, he began to send secret military information to the British side and, in 1780, he pushed Congress to obtain the command of the West Point fort in New York. He then offered the fort to the British in exchange for a position in the British Army and a vast sum of money.
Ultimately, Arnold’s plan was exposed by the Assassin Connor, but he fled on the British ship Vulture. Benedict Arnold still managed to earn a position in the British army, but also a reputation as the greatest traitor of the American Revolution.
