The Louisiana Bayou was a swamp-like region located in Louisiana, near the city of New Orleans. Mainly surrounded by marsh-filled areas, the bayou was primarily inhabited by alligators, who had a notorious reputation for attacking unsuspecting prey from the banks, or beneath the murky waters. As such, this made trees both a faster and a safer option for travelers navigating the area.

The bayou also housed many man-made structures, including the town of San Danje, Fort Saint-Jean and the hideout belonging to the mentor of the Assassin Order, Agaté.

History

The False Mackandal

In 1766, an ex-Assassin called Baptiste traveled to the bayou, posing as the deceased François Mackandal. After obtaining a number of followers to his cause, he planned to carry out a sacred ceremony on the Eve of Saint John. However, his true purpose was to take control of the bayou's smuggler operations, poison the nobles of New Orleans, force Agaté out of hiding and deliver him to the Templars, who in return for grant him membership into the Templar Order. This plot was later uncovered by the Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, who disrupted Baptiste's ritual and assassinated him.
