York, also known as Eoforwic during the Anglo-Saxon period, is a city located in North Yorkshire, England. The city served as the capital of the Kingdom of Northumbria during the early Middle Ages, until its conquest by the Vikings in 866. During this period, the city was renamed Jórvík.
History
York was originally founded as a town named Eboracum during the Roman occupation of Great Britain. Between the 2nd and early 5th century, the Hidden Ones had a bureau based in the city.[1] Following the depature of Roman legions, the city was settled by Saxon settlers, where it became known as Eoforwic.[2]
Trivia
- First known as Eboracum, York was initially settled as a Roman Fortress in 71CE and eventually recovered by Anglians by the 6th century, naming the city Eoforwic.
- When the Danes took over the city in 866, they renamed it Jorvik, which is where the name York comes from.
