York, formerly known as Jorvik, is a city and the county town of North Yorkshire , England. The city served as the capital of Northumbria during the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy, until its conquest by the Norsemen in 866. The city then became the capital of the Viking territory in England.

Trivia

First known as Eboracum, York was initially settled as a Roman Fortress in 71CE and eventually recovered by Anglians by the 6th century, naming the city Eoforwic.
- When the Danes took over the city in 866, they renamed it Jorvik, which is where the name York comes from.
