Tatsugoro (died 1582) was a Japanese samurai of the Oda clan during the late Sengoku period.
Biography
In the 1570s, working under Oda Nobunaga, Tatsugoro worked as an overseer and saw his one of his servants Gennojo steal his katana. As retribution, he traveled to meet Gennojo's parents, killed them, and placed their heads on pikes as a reminder. For further punishment, he forced Gennojo to work on building Nobunaga's castle, leading the young man on a path to rebel against daimyō rule and corruption.[1][2]
In 1582, Tatsugoro was stationed at Nijo Palace and caught sight of Gennojo and his associate, the Igan shinobi and Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe near a Kannon statue. Overhearing Gennojo's interpretation of his parents' demise, Tatsugoro interrupted and revealed the truth of why Gennojo's parents died and how Kannon cursed his parents with a child like him. Although Gennojo wanted to fight him, Naoe told him to leave as she faced the samurai herself. Tatsugoro then called for reinforcements and fought against Naoe but he and his men were all defeated and killed. However, his remarks led Gennojo to doubt himself and he ultimately committed suicide by exploding the rice storage with himself inside.[2]
