Sultanate of Sulu

The Sultanate of Sulu was a sultanate that ruled the Sulu Archipelago in the Philippines and the northeastern parts of Borneo from the 1450s until 1915.

History

In 1725, in an attempt to buy time for the British Assassin Edward Kenway and his crew to escape a Spanish Navy attack in Manila's harbor, the Dutch East India Company's chief navigator Jan van Aert volunteered to lure away the Spanish fleet and suggested to Edward that they reconvene in Sulu. Sometime later, despite being crippled under the crescent amulet's influence after recovering it from the late Visayan chief Rajah, Edward gave orders for the Fenghuang's crew to head south to Sulu, where they had agreed to meet Jan.

Unbeknownst to the Fenghuang's crew, however, Jan learned about their acquisition of the amulet and decided to strike a deal with the Sultan of Sulu, Badarud-Din I. In exchange for delivering the Piece of Eden into the sultan's hands, granting him an advantage over his Spanish rivals, Jan requested his and his associates' protection, allowing them to continue their search for more artifacts. The sultan accepted Jan's proposal, and later sent the Suluese fleet to intercept the Fenghuang, forcing its crew to surrender the amulet.

While the amulet was stored in a warehouse until the sultan's arrival, the Fenghuang's crew was imprisoned, though they soon managed to escape and attempted to recover the amulet. Meanwhile, the Fenghuang's captain Rupiya pretended to defect to Jan's side, only to knock him out for his duplicity while his back was turned.

At the same time, the Chinese Assassins Xiao Han, Liu Qing, and Xue Yan and their ally, Admiral Jeong, arrived in Sulu, seeking the amulet for their own ends. While Xiao Han and Liu Qing battled the Suluese guards, Xue Yan attempted to infiltrate the warehouse where the crescent amulet was kept and recover the artifact. However, she was stopped by Edward Kenway, moments before Jeong ordered her fleet to open fire on the warehouse, partially destroying it.

Edward was soon joined by John Young, who helped him fight against Xiao Han and Liu Qing. Meanwhile, both Xialun Qing and Xue Yan managed to enter the warehouse's ruins, and the former was the one to ultimately retrieve the amulet with the help of her pet monkey Wukong. However, as she attempted to bring the artifact back to her fellow crew members, Qing was taken hostage by Xue Yan.

The Chinese Assassins decided to try and bargain Qing's life for the amulet, but Jeong interrupted the exchange by ordering her fleet to fire on both the Assassins and their enemies. In the resulting confusion, Edward managed to seize the amulet and used it to defeat Xiao Han, though he hesitated to take his life when the artifact showed him visions of both his own death and the demise of his future son Haytham Kenway. Breaking free, Xiao Han attempted to kill John, but Qing took the blow instead and died in John's arms.

After grabbing the amulet, Xiao Han escaped with Liu Qing and Xue Yan and returned to Jeong's ship, which had been battling the Fenghuang. While Jeong set a course back to China, the Assassins argued about their actions in Sulu, specifically Xiao Han's murder of Qing, and questioned if they had lost their way in their pursuit of their goals. Meanwhile, Nagamasa and his mercenaries, who had arrived in Sulu to help the Fenghuang's crew, were sent by Shimazu Saito to pick up Edward and John. Leaving Qing's body behind, the mercenaries dragged the pair onto their ship before escaping from Sulu alongside the Fenghuang.
