Skrýmir, or Útgarða-Loki, was one of the Jötnar in Norse mythology.

Mythology

Skrýmir was the lord of the castle Útgarðar in Jötunheimr and was mentioned in the Prose Edda as a giant Thor, Loki and two of Thor's servants Þjálfi and Röskva, encountered during one of their travels. When searching for a place to sleep, they encountering a building. The building turned out to be a glove of Skrýmir and the four cower beneath a tree during the next night. Thor does two attempts to end the giant's life but failed. Eventually they met Skrýmir and were required to perform a feat to be welcome in his halls. Loki, Þjálfi and finally Thor all failed their tests. Eventually it turned out all tests they failed were illusions. Loki competed with wildfire, Þjálfi raced against thought, Thor's drinking horn was linked to the sea, and the cat Thor had to lift was Jörmungandr.[1]

Legacy and influence

In the 870s, Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir encountered a madman in Cent who asked her to count the stones in the circle. She did that thrice but came up with a different number each time. When she lost consciousness and woke, she felt like she had been tricked by Skrýmir himself.[2]
