Skrýmir, or Útgarða-Loki, was a jötunn in Norse mythology.
Mythology[edit | edit source]
Skrýmir was the lord of the castle Útgarðar in Jötunheimr and was mentioned in Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda as a giant whom Thor, Loki, and Thor's servants Þjálfi and Röskva encountered during one of their travels. When searching for a place to sleep, they saw a building that turned out to be Skrýmir's glove which he had put down as he slept nearby, and the four cowered beneath a tree the next night. Thor twice attempted to kill Skrýmir by hitting him with Mjölnir, but failed each time.[1]
Eventually, they met Skrýmir and were required to perform a feat to be welcome in his halls, though Loki, Þjálfi, and finally Thor all failed their tests. Having had enough fun at his guests' expense, Skrýmir revealed the tests were all illusions, as Loki competed with wildfire, Þjálfi raced against thought, Thor's drinking horn was linked to the sea, while the cat Thor had to lift was Jörmungandr. Furious at the deception, Thor brought Mjölnir to bear for a killing blow, only for Skrýmir to instantly disappear using magic.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
One of Skrýmir's gloves still lay in Jötunheimr when Havi went there in search of Angrboða.[2]
Legacy and influence[edit | edit source]
In the 870s, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir encountered a madman in Cent who asked her to count the stones in the circle. She did that thrice but came up with a different number each time. When she lost consciousness and woke, she commented that she felt she had been tricked by Skrýmir himself.[3]
