Shay Cormac's father
Shay Cormac’s father immigrated to America from Dublin with the rest of the Cormac family and settled in New York City.[1]
Biography
After the birth of his son, Shay Cormac, on September 12, 1731, Shay’s father lost his wife during childbirth. With little time to care for Shay due to his work as a merchant marine, Shay was raised by his aunt. By 1739, when Shay was eight years old, his father allowed him to join him at sea to earn his own wages. During their time at sea, they encountered pirates several times. In one such instance, Shay was forced to shoot a pirate captain during a fight. However, tragedy struck in 1747 when a fierce storm claimed the lives of Shay’s father and much of their crew.[1]
Legacy
His death had a devastating effect on Shay, who became more reckless and depressed, wandering the streets of New York looking for fights until he encountered his friend, Liam O'Brien, who recruited him to join the Colonial Assassins, a position Shay accepted.[1]
