A regular is any basic footsoldier that comprises the bulk of a military. While unspecialized troops have commonly been referred to as such, other names like militia during the Renaissance,[1][2] and they were nicknamed grunts in the Ming dynasty.[3] During the American Revolution, British Regulars were derisively referred to as "Redcoats" or "Lobsterbacks" by the Patriots.[4] At the Ptolemaic Egypt, regular infantry was used by the Ptolemaic Army in Egypt and in the Roman Army served in Roman colonies. [citation needed] The Hoplite infantry was the regular type of soldier in Greece. The Athenian peltasts and Spartan phalangites were common types of the Athenian and Spartan militaries.
