A regular soldier

A regular is any basic footsoldier that comprises the bulk of a military. While unspecialized troops have commonly been referred to as such, other names like militia during the Renaissance, and they were nicknamed grunts in the Ming dynasty. During the American Revolution, British Regulars were derisively referred to as "Redcoats" or "Lobsterbacks" by the Patriots. At the Ptolemaic  Egypt, regular infantry was used by the Ptolemaic Army in Egypt and in the Roman Army served in Roman colonies. ^{[citation needed]} The Hoplite infantry was the regular type of soldier in Greece. The Athenian peltasts and Spartan phalangites were common types of the Athenian and Spartan militaries. ^{[citation needed]}
