Ptolemy XII Auletes
This article is about a pharaoh of Egypt and the father of Ptolemy XIII and Cleopatra. For other uses, see Ptolemy.
Ptolemy Neos Dionysos Theos Philopator Theos Philadelphos (c. 117 – c. 51 BCE), better known as Ptolemy XII Auletes, was a pharaoh of the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt. He was the father of Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIII, who succeeded him and jointly ruled Egypt after his death.
At some point during Ptolemy's reign, an earthquake struck the city of Alexandria, causing damage to the city as well as the Tomb of Alexander the Great, altering the structure's foundation.[1] Ptolemy was also a close ally of Pompey, who commissioned a shield for the pharaoh as a gift for the alliance.[2]
