Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love and beauty. She appeared to Kyros of Zarax during the sixth century BCE.

Biography

The temple of Aphrodite

Kyros of Zarax wanted to challenge the princess of Arcadia, Atalanta, to a race. But knowing he was no longer the champion he was when he was younger, he traveled to his mentor Pythagoras for help. Pythagoras directed him to an abandoned temple that was dedicated to Aphrodite, and told him he would find what he needed there.

Kyros traveled to the temple but was struck by a fierce blizzard, causing him to pass out in front of the temple. When he woke up, he was in a an orchard, where he saw a young woman pluck three apples and take them to the temple of Aphrodite. The young woman could not hear or see him, leaving Kyros confused.

Aphrodite in the orchard

When he woke up again, he was covered in snow and without any feeling in his limbs, but he managed to make his way into the temple. He looked at the spot where Aphrodite had left the three apples, but now there was only one Golden Apple.

Kyros took the Apple and used it to defeat Atalanta in a race, finding Atalanta's beauty to rival that of Aphrodite herself.
