Anxi
Anxi, officially the Grand Protectorate to Pacify the West (安西大都護府, Ānxī Dàdūhù Fǔ), was a Protectorate established by the Tang dynasty in 640 to organize and control the Western Regions.[1]
History
In 751, Gao Xianzhi, the jiedushi of Anxi, led his forces westward in an expansionist campaign, leading to a clash with the Abbasid Caliphate at the Battle of Talas. Owing to the betrayal of the Karluk mercenaries, the Tang suffered a decisive defeat, and most of their 30,000 strong army was annihilated.[2] This event marked the limits of the Tang dynasty's expansion westward into Central Asia.[3]
