The Antarctic Treaty System is a series of international agreements established to ensure Antarctica remains a peaceful, non-militarized, and environmentally protected region.

Purpose

Signed in 1959 and enacted in 1961, the ATS has been ratified by 46 to 48 countries. It governs Antarctica by prohibiting territorial claims, military activities (except for peaceful purposes), resource exploitation, and hunting. The treaty ensures that the continent is used solely for scientific research and international cooperation while preventing activities such as nuclear testing or environmental harm.[1]

History

On 4 September 2012, a news articles by the Abstergo News Wire was emailed to Warren Vidic, the Animus Project head and subscriber to the news service. The article detailed the growing tensions mounting over the efforts of the United States and the European Union drilling on the continent. The main concern being that such activities were possibly in violation of the Treaty agreement, additionally the tense situation became more complicated with the allegedly unrelated presence of two naval destroyers in the vicinity.[2]
