An owl is one of several species of birds belonging to the genus Strix, which includes over 200 species of mostly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey. Owls can be found all around the world except for the polar ice caps and remote islands. They hunt and subsist on small mammals, insects and smaller birds, though there are cases where they also hunt for fish.[1]

Mythology[edit | edit source]

In Greek mythology, owls were associated with wisdom, vigilance and the godess Athena.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

During the Peloponnesian War, Athens' symbol was the owl due to its patron deity Athena. The owl insignia was found on everything from the weapons and armor used by the Athenian military, to the city-state's drachmae and statues.[2]

In 2013, the Sample 17 Project supervisor Melanie Lemay jokingly compared the unkept beards of pirates, such as those seen in Edward Kenway's genetic memories, to owl nests.[3]
