The Northern Expedition was Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's military campaign to unify China under the Nationalist Party, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), and end the Warlord Era. It is so named because it was a northward push from the KMT's base in Guangdong to Shanghai and beyond, with the ultimate aim of capturing Beijing, the internationally recognized capital.[1]
