Captain Rupiya, previously called Captain Hogbeard,[1] was a pirate captain who raided in the Strait of Malacca in the 18th century, during which he gained notoriety as the Terror of Malacca.
Rupiya was previously hired by Master Sun of the Hualien Trading Company in Macau to sabotage and attack the merchant ships of Sun's rival Madam Lee. After being defeated and captured by the British Assassin Edward Kenway and the Dutch navigator John Young,[2] Rupiya later changed sides and worked with them to escort a trading vessel to Manila within the Captaincy General of the Philippines.[1]
Behind the scenes
Rupiya is a character introduced in Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple. His name comes from the Hindustani rupiyā, which itself is Sanskrit in origin meaning "wrought silver, a coin of silver". It shares a similar meaning in Episode 24 when Edward referred to Rupiya's name as meaning a second-rate coin. Rupiya, or Rupee, is also a currency used in many countries such as India, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
