Mari
Mari is Kō Risa's younger cousin on her mother's side and as such refers to her as "Aunt". Along with Risa, she later joined the Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins.
Biography
During her childhood, Mari was living in an abusive household as her father had beaten over any small infraction. One night, she was sent outside in the cold and was caught by her cousin Risa. Instantly going back inside, Mari remained silent while Risa confronted her uncle. While Risa promised to house Mari, Mari's father grabbed Risa and threw her over the railing much to Mari's dismay. Fortunately, Risa survived with little injuries but Mari left her father's custody and lived with her grandfather as a result.[1]
In 2019, Mari entered a restaurant in Yokohama and found her aunt. Asking her where her cousin Risa was, her mother replied that she was running late.[2] After Risa ended her session, Mari luckily found her cousin in the streets of Yokohama.[3] At a café, both girls talk about her time in the Animus but were interrupted by Kiyoshi Takakura, who offered his card and stated that the war is still raging on, before leaving.[4]
The next day, Mari and Risa met with Kiyoshi at a secret location, while he divulged that both the Assassins and Templars were still active and that Risa's doctor, Dr. Kaori Kagami, was a Templar. However, while Risa left to continue her therapy with Dr. Kagami, Mari stayed to listen how the Animus may leave some side effects. Before he could speak more, an elderly woman asked her if she was willing to take the plunge for Risa, to which Mari accepted.[4] Mari and Kiyoshi continued their conversation as he explained that Risa was expendable the moment Dr. Kagami was done for her and Mari soon left to inform Risa.[5]
Mari later found Risa after one of the sessions on the streets to inform her of Kiyoshi's information.[6] Together, they discussed about how the Assassins overran a facility in Madrid, where Dr. Kagami used to work. Nevertheless, Mari saw her cousin leave for her session with Dr. Kagami to fully understand Shao Jun's memories.[7] Mari informs Kiyoshi, who promises to keep an eye on Risa and Dr. Kagami for her.[8]
Sadly, Mari was called by Kiyoshi, who told that Dr. Kagami had forced Lisa into the Animus and will dispose of her after learning of the location of Shao Jun's treasure. Mari asked to come to save Risa, to which Kiyoshi accepted.[9] Breaking into the facility, Kiyoshi took down most of the guards while Mari saved him from a hidden guard. Fortunately, they came across Risa, who freed herself from Dr. Kagami and held a pistol on her. Watching, Mari saw Risa spare Dr. Kagami and destroy the Animus before leaving the doctor in disgrace. Outside, the elderly woman Saeko Mochizuki met with the three of them and offered Risa a chance to join the Assassins. When Risa accepted, Mari asked to join as well, which Saeko accepted as well. There, both girls were tasked to find Shao Jun's Precursor box, to which they both accepted.[10]
