The Magnis Fortress was a Roman fort attached to the western portion of Hadrian's Wall, located in the northwest corner of Yorkshire, England. It was later used as a stronghold and staging area by the Picts for their incursions into Northumbria.
History
In 876, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir joined Faravid and his men at the camp outside the fortress as Ljufvina Bjarmarsdottir rallied the men together. Upon their arrival, Faravid and Eivor were later greeted by Halfdan, who was outraged at this unsanctioned war. Ljufvina calmed down the tension and asked all to ready for the battle. Ljufvina also noticed the Picts sent out an emissary before battle. Halfdan asked Eivor to join him in this meeting.[1]
Within their meeting, the Picts and the Norse warriors traded insults as Halfdan and Eivor asked for their surrender. However, the Pict warrior revealed that King Ricsige of Northumbria was a secret ally to them, with his fyrd joining the fight against Halfdan's army. Throwing a war hammer, Halfdan began the assault on the fortress. Eivor worked her way through the fortress by destroying gate reinforcements, breached the palisades, and destroyed links of a drawbridge. In all, she gained entry and helped Halfdan rid the fortress of the Picts.[1]
After gaining control of the fortress, Halfdan roared victoriously as he wondered if Ricsige was the traitor all along. However, Eivor noticed Ricsige was nowhere nearby. Before any celebration, more Pict warriors arrived to regain the fortress. However, Halfdan, Eivor, Faravid, Ljufvina and their forces defeated the Pict reinforcements as Faravid noticed Ricsige fleeing. Chasing him down, Eivor caught up to Ricsige and assassinated him. From his death, Halfdan saw himself needed to be in the front lines and proclaimed to become the next king.[1]

The fortress is a mixture of Roman and Pictish architecture.[2]
