Lykaon was a king of Arkadia in Greek mythology.

According to the legends, the king was cruel, and for his wickedness he was cursed by the god Zeus to become a bloodthirsty beast.[1]

In 5th century BCE a cave on Mount Psophis in Arkadia was named after him. Fittingly, it was the den of a pack of wolves. The Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the den, killing the leader of the pack.[2] She also slew a wolf called the Lykaon Wolf at the request of Daphnae, the acting leader of the Daughters of Artemis.[1]

Trivia

  • The name Lykaon is derived from the Greek word λύκος (lúkos), which means 'wolf'.
