Leonard Hazlewood was a British private detective, active in the mid-19th century.[1]

Biography

In 1862, Hazlewood was in the employ of a viscount that had been attacked in the Maylebone churchyard alongside two bodyguards and a friend, who lost his life. The private detective was then hired to find and detain their attacker. Hazlewood decided that the best course of his investigation was to tail police constable Frederick Abberline, who ended up confronting him. Abberline didn't much care about the case until Hazlewood revealed that the attacker had been an "Indian boy with bare feet", who he also remarked was an acrobat.[2] Abberline hauled Hazlewood to the sergeant's office to support his case before heading to confirm the identity of the attacker.[3]

Hazlewood later met with Marchant and Cavanagh to discuss the belief that the latter's employee Bharat Singh was the attacker, to which Cavanagh said they would conduct their own investigations and would get back to Hazlewood.[4]
