Kheshig
The Kheshig were the Imperial bodyguard of the Mongol royalty.
History
In 1227, the Kheshig were acting as the personal guards of the founder of the Mongol Empire, Genghis Khan. At Xingqing, the Mongols had taken over during their invasion. However, Assassin Qulan Gal and Mentor Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad came across Genghis's camp and killed all of the Kheshig stationed, after Altaïr was spotted, before they moved to reach Genghis Khan.[1]
By 1259, the Kheshig continued to guard the Khan's family. During the march to Burkhan Khaldun to lay Möngke Khan's body to rest, the Kheshig were led by Asutai, the fourth son of Möngke. During the march, Asutai began to talk with Mongolian commander Bayan to join the Kheshig and the Templars. He explained that he and his father are part of the Templar Order, like most of the Kheshig themselves. Ultimately, Bayan accepted and was recruited into both organizations.[2]
