John Russell, 1st Earl Russell (1792 – 1878) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1846 to 1852 and again from 1865 to 1866.
Biography
On 22 January 1866, in a royal correspondence addressed to him from Queen Victoria, Lord Russell was informed that the Queen, despite apprehensions, could attend the Parliament's opening at her convenience, aided by her daughter Alberta. The Queen expressed reluctance and resentment toward the public's desire to witness her in mourning, alone in state, describing it as an ordeal akin to an execution. Despite her shaken nerves and deep sorrow, she reluctantly agreed to fulfill the obligation but bemoaned the lack of sensitivity from those insisting on her presence.[1]
