James Blanchard
James Blanchard was a serial counterfeit coiner active during the late 17th century, especially during the Great Recoinage of 1696.[1]
Biography
In 1696, Blanchard worked at a water mill in Surrey. One day, Isaac Newton and Omar Khaled arrived to investigate the counterfeiting, before being ambushed by Blanchard. Khaled and Blanchard battle, causing the floor to collapse beneath them and dropping them onto the river below. After taking turns drowning each other, Khaled overpowers Blanchard before Newton intervened. Blanchard was arrested and the fake money within the mill was gathered to be taken to the Tower of London.[1]
