Jalalabad is the fifth biggest town of Afghanistan,[1] being located about 90 miles from its capital, Kabul.[2]

History

In January 1842, after uprisings in the city of Kabul, the British Army reached agreements with Afghan leader Akbar Khan for safe passage for their retreat to Jalalabad. Khan betrayed them and, of the sixteen thousand people that set out on the march, only three ever made it to Jalalabad: William Brydon, Cavanagh and Walter Lavelle.[2] On 7 April 1842, the British garrison at Jalalabad attacked Akbar Khan's lines, where Cavanagh proved himself indomitable in combat.[3]
